Phillip Day: “Credence is delighted to make available one of the hottest new antioxidant products on the market, the one everyone is talking about. Dubbed ‘the ultimate antioxidant’, I believe astaxanthin to be so important that my wife and I have included it in our own supplement routine, along with vitamin D-3, the high potency B group, Heartfast and apricot kernels. I will certainly be recommending this to everyone in my seminars from now on. There is good reason to be excited.
“Astaxanthin’s unique properties enable it to cross the blood-brain and blood-retinal barriers, making it extremely desirable for those with problems in these areas. Of particular importance is its immune-enhancing properties and singlet-oxygen quenching for those in middle age or elderly years.”
ASTA – WHAT?
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid, oxygenated pigment extracted from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. It is the molecule that gives flamingos, salmon and certain crustaceans their colour. Astaxanthin is a natural complex of carotenoids including astaxanthin, beta-carotene, lutein and canthaxanthin in its own natural oil containing small amounts of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (essential fatty acids). This complex provides a more desirable group of carotenoids than a single dietary ingredient. Astaxanthin’s unique molecular structure renders it one of the most potent natural antioxidants available in supplement form.
Astaxanthin has been found in studies to be 65 times more powerful than vitamin C, 54 times more powerful than beta-carotene (the vitamin A precursor), and 14 times more powerful than vitamin E. In ‘singlet oxygen quenching’, a particular type of oxidation, astaxanthin has been found to be 550 times more powerful than vitamin E and 11 times more powerful than beta-carotene at neutralizing singlet oxygen.
Inferior astaxanthin products are derived from salmon or crustacean material, whereas extracting astaxanthin pigment from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis renders an esterified form of the nutrient, surrounded by stabilising oils.
